Voice Writer (Echo Captioning)
Part-Time Weekday Afternoons

Like the idea of providing a service that will assist thousands of disabled Connecticut residents? Then come start or continue a career within Connecticut’s growing broadcast media industry by applying to the Connecticut Network (CT-N).

CT-N, the Connecticut Network, is seeking a part-time Voice Writer for our dynamic, fast-paced video production and broadcast operation in Hartford. This position creates real-time broadcast quality closed captions for the deaf and hard-of-hearing using speech-to-text technology. A trial period is required and on-the-job training is provided.

What is Closed Captioning?
Closed captioning displays the audio portion of a television program as text on the TV screen providing a critical link to news, entertainment, and information for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

What is a Voice Writer?
A Voice Writer re-speaks what they hear and inserts specific voice and keyboard commands to create an accurate textual representation of the program audio. This requires excellent enunciation skills, quick decision making, and time training voice recognition software to understand and correctly interpret your voice.

We require the successful candidate to have:
  • An interest in providing access to media content to millions of closed caption users
  • Excellent listening skills with the ability to place dialog (the spoken word) into context
  • A clear speaking voice and excellent enunciation skills
  • Above-average knowledge of English grammar, syntax, and pronunciation
  • Proficiency in PC-based applications and solid typing skills
  • The ability to make quick decisions while multi-tasking
  • At least 2 years of experience in a professional office environment
  • A friendly personality who can work closely with an energetic, committed team
A strong interest in and/or knowledge of Connecticut state government is a definite plus! Schedule flexibility, including working occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime is required. Ideal/usual schedule is Monday – Friday afternoons, starting at noon or 1 p.m. Starting pay is $13 per hour. CT-N is managed and operated by the Connecticut Public Affairs Network, Inc. (CPAN), a non-profit state contractor.
